Girls of Color: Trauma and Punitive Response

The needs of girls of color are often overlooked, neglected or criminalized, particularly African American/black girls, leading to overrepresentation in school disciplinary actions, the pipeline to prison phenomenon, and commercial sex trafficking. This interactive workshop will examine the historical and cultural perspectives of girls of color in this country, the impact of gender on the experience of trauma and punitive responses to trauma-related behaviors. The intersection of race, class, and socioeconomic status also will also be explored, with strategies for intervention as additional areas of focus. (Elective for VAW certificate or Elective for the Trauma Certificate)
