Addressing Vicarious Trauma in Organizations

ID: 5838WEB

The impact of secondary and vicarious trauma on workers who provide services in settings with complex populations is not a new concept. Frequent exposure to the trauma experiences of others increases the risk of vicarious trauma. There has been little organizational focus placed on how to help employees to manage this exposure. Vicarious trauma impacts productivity, work performance, quality of care, turnover, and absenteeism. Leadership can decrease the impact through trauma informed management practices that incorporate policies that address and reduce the impact on workers. This is an investment that is often overlooked by leadership in organizations. This workshop will identify the signs of burnout among workers, leadership, and teams. Policies and practices that can be incorporated by agencies and organizations to mitigate the risk of vicarious and secondary trauma will be presented. A focus will be placed on hiring leadership that has a highly developed sense of self-awareness and can create an environment that supports self-care and wellness. Case presentations that highlight organizational challenges will also be reviewed. (This is an elective for the Trauma Response and Crisis Intervention Certificate Program)
