Cultural Competence and Equity in LGBT Health Care: Strategies for Medical and Mental Health Providers

ID: 4204

This workshop provides health care practitioners with strategies to promote culturally competent medical and mental health care to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. Topics include affirmative terminology and LGBT cultural information, as well as discussion of the unique medical and mental health needs of LGBT individuals, including needs associated with coming out, gender-confirming transition, sexual activity, STDs, aging, minority stress, suicide, and substance use. The workshop also explores the reasons for historical inadequacies in LGBT health care that might affect current health status, including disproportionate lack of insurance coverage, non-disclosure to health care practitioners, lack of provider awareness of LGBT health care needs, and previous negative health care experiences.
