Creative Approaches to Coping with Self-Mutilation

ID: 5239

The workshop is designed for clinicians who are seeking alternative interventions for their clients coping with self-harm behaviors. The intervention is the basis for a book published in 2010. Background information on risk factors and types of self-mutilation are discussed. The intervention, a creative approach to understanding self-mutilation, is based on narrative therapy, and will explore how clients can "express" their current life story through alternative means as well as re-appraise their situations and find new coping mechanisms for emotions or pathology. The workshop includes case examples of clients who have gone through group intervention to treat their self-mutilating behaviors, as well as additional resources
